Midwife to Young Mothers
Debbie writes about the Young Mothers for Young Women program that has operated in Caboolture, Queensland since 2018. The program was established as a response to the region’s higher than national average of births from young mothers aged 20 and under, as well as a high rate of ‘fail to attend’ antenatal appointments.
There is a professional health team as well as a dedicated number of young mothers themselves who support participants and facilitate groups. The average age of women in the program is seventeen. Debbie makes the point that they are not just ‘teen mums’; they are incredible young women with aspirations who also happen to be pregnant and parenting.
