Saving Babies in East Timor

Ingrid Bucens
Australian paediatrician

Ingrid has worked in East Timor in all sectors of the health system, from government to UN agencies, NGOs and in the hospital sector. She documents some of her work in East Timor, especially as it related to improving the quality of hospital care for children in resource poor settings.

One intervention in the neonatal ward required a combination of changing management practices, changing nursing practices, and introducing systematic training for staff. Clearly, this was no small undertaking but both the quantitative and qualitative results supported the change process.
